Family route change

May 25, 2025 by Bob Lott

Sustrans route 544 has undergone a modification after a landowner withdraw consent to access their land. The new route makes use of the upgraded Icknield Greenway and the quiet lane between West Hendred and East Ginge. This is an equally pleasent route and adds no further distance to the ride. The full route description has been updated and a new GPC file is available for download on the Family route page.

Minor Route Change

June 1, 2024 by Bob Lott

Please note there has been a minor route change on the 25/35 mile route out of East Ginge. You will no-longer turn right at the post box. Instead continue on the road for 100m then turn right on the main farm track heading south towards the Ridgeway.

Cut Off Times Updated

May 30, 2023 by Bob Lott

We’ve brought forward our cut-off times on the Endurance, Leisure, and Teen Spirit rides:

  • Endurance riders leaving East Ilsley after 12:00pm will be requested to complete their ride via the Leisure route. An average speed of just 8.2 mph is required to avoid this.
  • Leisure and Teen Spirit riders leaving the A34 underpass after 12:30pm will be requested to complete their ride via the Family route. An average speed of just 7 and 4.5 mph respectively is required to avoid this.

These changes are to ensure the route is cleared in good time and our volunteer marshals are stood down in a timely fashion. Please choose a route appropriate to your average speed.

Signs are going out!

May 9, 2023 by Bob Lott

We’ve just deployed our warning signs to the local horse riding fraternity to make sure word gets out and nobody is too surprised to find the routes teeming with happy smiley cyclists on the 17th June!

We do take safety around horses very seriously as great harm can come to both horse rider and cyclist if a horse is spooked. Always call out to a horse rider to ensure they and the horse know you are there. Give the horse a wide birth and if that’s not possible stop and wait for it to pass. Bridleways are a shared national treasure and they are all the more pleasant when horse riders and cyclists respect each other.

E-Bike Riders

June 12, 2022 by Bob Lott

E-bikes are welcome at Uptonogood, but they must be compliant with UK law – e.g. no “chipped” or overpowered e-bikes. These are considered illegal in the UK and are not allowed at our event.

If you are travelling at speeds faster than the anticipated unpowered mountain biker speed there may be a chance that you get to Marshal Points before marshals are in post, thereby missing directions and/or food, water.

Although going fast on your E-bike can be fun, it can also be dangerous to yourself and others. When riding near other trail users, slow down. If you must pass, be polite. Ask the other rider, hiker, or horseback rider if you can pass and allow them to respond before manoeuvring around them.

All MTB riders agree to ride legally, appropriately and considerately at all times.

E-Bike Batteries: As organisers, we are duty-bound to prioritise our resources to deal with genuine first-aid and mechanical issues. Flat e-bike batteries mid-ride are not considered genuine mechanical issues, rather the predictable outcome of poor planning. It is therefore suggested that e-bike riders are familiar with their bike’s battery range, and if necessary carry a charged spare battery. Riders with flat e-bike batteries are requested to make their own way to the nearest Marshal Point where advise can be sort as to the most direct way back to Upton.
